Why I became a teacher

It’s only apt to write my first post on medium about my profession and passion. I have been lucky enough to be able to translate my passion into my profession. Education, I am of a view, is that one right that should be within everyone’s reach. It is a power that anyone can hold. An instrument to fight any social inhibitions that constrain you. No socio-economic inequality or lack of material and financial resources should hold you back. Pen and paper are the most powerful tools for success.

Why I became a teacher? It is, in my eyes, the best way you can make a difference. To be an enabler is extremely rewarding. The satisfaction I get when I hear my students be confident and knowledgeable brings real joy. Students explore their creativity and find their passion. As they say, ‘being a teacher is having a deep love of learning and want to pass that to others. The feeling of being able to share allows you to be confident in your own abilities. To be able to transfer knowledge and values makes you a role model for the next generation. And that’s the best thing.

I get to network a lot. Working in Karachi, Pakistan as an educationist pushes me to network more and more. I get to network through conferences, training sessions, and the lectures I deliver. And I believe that the biggest thing we as teachers do is to meet students and listen to their ideas. I am a learner myself. Education is always a two-way street. A teacher is always a learner. This kind of humility is not always found in every profession. The networking goes beyond students and colleagues. It is with the parents, assistants and the wider educational community.

I feel fulfilled because there’s always time and space for more. The profession can be quite flexible in terms of the working hours. It is even more so during these difficult times of COVID. The learning and teaching processes however never come to a halt. With teaching now being online, I can attend to all my responsibilities more efficiently, I think. This kind of flexibility does not exist in every profession.

Your efforts as a teacher are acknowledged. And that part makes you realise that you, at the end of the day, doing the right thing. You can, after all, befriend your students. This is why I became a teacher and will always love my job. It is more than a job. A hobby. A passion.
